1. Keep up with servicing
A well-maintained engine burns fuel more efficiently than one running on worn parts. Clogged air filters, dirty fuel injectors, and overdue oil changes all force an engine to work harder for the same output. Sticking to manufacturer service intervals, especially before and after peak season, is one of the simplest ways to protect fuel economy.
2. Check tyre pressure regularly
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, meaning machinery burns more fuel to cover the same ground. This applies to tractors, trucks, and utes alike. A quick pressure check before big jobs (cultivation, harvest, or long transport runs) is a five-minute task that pays for itself.
3. Match the machine to the job
Running oversized machinery on light tasks or underpowered gear straining on heavy jobs both waste fuel. Where possible, match implement size and horsepower requirements to the actual job at hand rather than defaulting to the biggest tractor on the yard.
4. Reduce idling time
Idling burns fuel without doing any work. On farms with multiple operators or contractors, a simple "engines off when not in use" habit during loading, waiting periods, or smoko breaks can meaningfully cut fuel use over a season.
5. Plan routes and jobs to minimise travel
Whether it's paddock work or fuel delivery runs, reducing unnecessary travel between sites saves fuel and time. Grouping jobs by location, planning cultivation patterns to reduce overlap, and scheduling deliveries efficiently all help.
7. Monitor usage
Keeping track of fuel use per machine or per job even simple logbook records helps spot problems early. A sudden jump in consumption can be an early warning sign of a mechanical issue worth checking before it becomes a bigger (and more expensive) repair.
