Aviation Fuel in the South Island: What Pilots Need to Know About Avgas & Jet A-1

Whether you're flying a Cessna out of a rural strip or operating a commercial helicopter service, getting the right fuel at the right location is non-negotiable. RD Petroleum is a CAA Part 19F certified aviation fuel supplier, and we've been expanding our aviation network across the South Island.

Here's what pilots and operators need to know about aviation fuel in the South Island.

Avgas vs. Jet A-1: What's the Difference?

Avgas (Aviation Gasoline)

Avgas is used in piston-engine aircraft. Avgas has a higher octane rating than regular automotive petrol and is specifically formulated for aircraft piston engines.

If you're flying a light aircraft and you're not sure which fuel you need, check your aircraft's Pilot Operating Handbook (POH), it will specify the approved fuel grade.

Jet A-1

JetA-1 is a kerosene-based fuel used in turbine-engine aircraft, including jet aircraft, turboprop aircraft, and most helicopters. It's the most widely used aviation fuel in the world and is what you'll need if you're operating a turbine-powered machine.

Misfuelling, putting Avgas into a turbine engine, or Jet A-1 into a piston engine, is a serious safety risk. Always verify the fuel type before refuelling.

CAA Part 19F Certification, What It Means for You

Our aviation division holds CAA Part 19F certification, which means we meet the Civil Aviation Authority's requirements for the handling and storage of aviation fuel. This certification covers our processes, equipment, and training, so you can refuel with confidence.
