Winter in the South Island is hard on farm equipment, and your fuel storage is no exception. Cold temperatures, condensation, and wet conditions can all affect the quality of your bulk diesel, and a fuel problem during calving or lambing season is the last thing you need.

The Main Risks to Farm Fuel in Winter
Water Contamination
Condensation is one of the most common causes of water getting into diesel tanks. As temperatures drop overnight, warm air inside the tank cools and moisture condenses on the tank walls. Over time, this water settles at the bottom of the tank and can cause real problems, including microbial growth, filter blocking, and fuel system damage.
Check: If your fuel looks cloudy or hazy, water contamination is likely. A water-finding paste on a dipstick will give you a definitive answer.
Diesel Bug (Microbial Growth)
'Diesel bug' is a catch-all term for the bacteria, mould, and yeast that can grow at the water-diesel interface in your tank. It's more common in warmer months, but contaminated fuel stored over winter can develop serious issues by the time you need it in spring.
Signs: Dark, sludgy residue in filters, unexplained engine problems, or a foul smell from your tank.

Keep tanks as full as possible, less air space means less condensation
Inspect tank vents to make sure they're clear and not letting water in
Check tank seals, lids, and joints for wear or damage before the wet season
If you suspect contamination, get the fuel tested before using it in expensive machinery
Ensure your tank bunding is clear of debris so any leaks are captured
When to Call for Help
If you have serious contamination, the fuel may need to be removed entirely. Don't try to run contaminated diesel through your machinery, the cost of a fuel system repair far outweighs the cost of sorting the storage problem.
