Fuel gets all the attention, but lubricants are just as important to keeping your farm equipment running well. Using the wrong grade of engine oil, gear oil, or grease can accelerate wear, cause overheating, and lead to expensive mechanical failures.
Here's a quick guide to help you get the right lubricant for the right job.
Engine Oil
Engine oil is the most frequently changed lubricant on farm equipment. The two key specifications to get right are the viscosity grade (e.g. 15W-40) and the quality standard (e.g. API CI-4+, ACEA E7). Modern diesel farm machinery, tractors, telehandlers, self-propelled sprayers, typically requires a heavy-duty diesel engine oil. Always check your operator's manual for the specific grade and specification required. Using a lower-quality or incorrect grade can void warranties and cause premature engine wear.
Hydraulic Oil
Hydraulic systems on tractors and implements require clean, correctly specified hydraulic fluid. Contamination (water, dirt, or the wrong fluid type) is one of the leading causes of hydraulic system failure. Change hydraulic oil and filters at the intervals specified in your manual, not when it looks bad, but on schedule.
Gear and Transmission Oils
Gearboxes, differentials, and final drives all have specific oil requirements. Using automotive gear oil in agricultural applications, or vice versa, is a common mistake that can lead to serious damage. Wet clutch systems in particular require oil with specific friction characteristics.
Greases
Greasing is one of the most important and most neglected maintenance tasks on farm equipment. Grease points on implements, PTO shafts, wheel bearings, and linkage pins need regular attention, especially during and after heavy work. Use a quality multi-purpose EP (extreme pressure) grease for most farm applications.
